GAWAI DAYAK

This is a festival celebrated by the Dayak community of Sarawak on the 1st of June every year. Traditional cakes and pastries made out of rice flour, sugar and coconut milk will be prepared. “Tuak” or rice wine will be the main feature of the Gawai Dayak festival. The Gawai Dayak festival will begin with the ceremony of getting rid of bad luck, conducted by the “Tuai Gawai” (Fiest Chief). The Tuai Gawai will begin this “miring” or offering ceremony on the balcony of the longhouse. He will pray for long life and good fortune. At 12 midnight the ceremony of drinking a special drink called “air pengayu” will be done in the hope of having a long, healthy and successful life. On the morning of the 1st of June, at exactly 7 a.m , the “Tuai Rumah” or head of the longhouse, will, with several occupants of the longhouse,  send the plate of offering to the “tiang pengingat” which is a pillar often used to build longhouses.
