GEORGE TOWN: A boria ensemble performed by 2,811 people of Kampung Seronok in Bayan Lepas here have set a new record in the Malaysia Book of Records.
The feat led by renowned boria performer Syed Akir Syed Ahmad was also participated by Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim in the 10-minute performance.
Boria is a traditional theatre performance encompassing dance, music and comic sketches.
It begins with the comic sketch followed by a song and dance.
Yesterday’s feat broke an earlier record set by 2,020 performers in 2006 at the Penang International Sports Arena.
The performers comprised people of all ages. The attempt was part of the 1Malaysia Boria Festival, which also featured a boria competition by 58 troupes with 1,276 members.
Dr Rais later signed the Malaysia Book of Records certificate before presenting it to Tourism Ministry deputy secretary-general Dr Junaida Lee Abdullah.
